Equity

Equity is the WheeloRatings implementation of the AFL Player Ratings.

Kick Rating

Kick ratings have been developed by crow_data_sigh. Retention is how likely a kick is to be retained by a teammate. Threat is how likely a kick is to result in a shot at goal later in the chain.

  • Threat Rating: a measure of how often a player’s kicks result in a shot at goal later in the chain compared to expectation.
  • Retention Rating: a measure of how often a player’s kicks are retained by a teammate compared to expectation.

Possessions

  • CP: Contested possessions
  • UP: Uncontested possessions
  • Poss: Total possessions
  • CP%: Contested possessions / total possessions
  • Int Poss: Intercept possessions
  • GB Gets: Ground ball gets
  • Hard Gets: Hard ball gets. A disputed ball at ground level under direct physical pressure or out of a ruck contest, resulting in an opportunity to effect a legal disposal.
  • Loose Gets: Loose ball gets. A disputed ball at ground level not under direct physical pressure that results in an opportunity to record a legal disposal.
  • Gath HO: Gathers from hitout. A possession gained from a teammate’s hitout-to-advantage
  • Crumb: Crumbing possessions. Ground ball gets that are won by a player at ground level after a marking contest.
  • HB Rec: Handball receives

  • Ctr Clr: Centre clearances
  • Stp Clr: Stoppage clearances
  • Tot: Total clearances
  • 1st Poss: First possessions at stoppages
  • 1st Poss to Clr: Proportion of first possessions where the team won the clearance

Expected Scores (xScores)

  • xWins: Expected number of wins based on expected scores in each game.
  • xW +/-: Number of wins above or below expected wins.
  • xSc: Average expected score per game (excludes rushed behinds).
  • xSc +/-: Average score above or below expected per game (excludes rushed behinds).
  • xSc / Shot: Average expected score per shot at goal, reflecting the average difficulty of shots taken.
  • Rating: Average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.
  • xSc / Sh (Set): Average expected score per shot at goal for set shots, reflecting the average difficulty of shots taken.
  • Rating (Set): Average score above or below expected score per shot at goal for set shots.
  • xSc / Sh (Gen): Average expected score per shot at goal for shots in general play, reflecting the average difficulty of shots taken.
  • Rating (Gen): Average score above or below expected score per shot at goal for shots in general play.

xChainScores

  • Total: Expected points scored based on the origin of a team’s chains, including clearances, turnovers, and kick-ins.
  • Stop: Expected points scored from stoppages.
  • Turnover: Expected points scored from turnovers.

Score Sources

  • Kick In: Points scored from kick-ins.
  • Stop: Points scored from stoppages.
  • Turnover: Points scored from turnovers.

Score Origin

  • Def Half: Points scored from defensive half.
  • Fwd Half: Points scored from forward half.
  • Ctr Bnc: Points scored from centre bounce.

Transition

Chains include all kick-in chains, all clearances, and intercepts with at least one disposal in the chain.

  • Chain to Sc.: proportion of all chains that resulted in a score.
  • D50 to F50: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive 50 that resulted in an inside 50.
  • D50 to Sc.: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive 50 that resulted in a score.
  • Def Half to F50: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive half that resulted in an inside 50.
  • Def Half to Sc.: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive half that resulted in a score.

Defence

  • Def 1v1: Defensive one-on-one contests
  • Loss %: Percentage of defensive one-on-one contests lost

  • To Cl: Hit outs to clearance. Proportion of hit outs where the team won the clearance.
